ONE STEP AT A TIME

June 4, 2023

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Psalm 37:23 (NLT)

When my wife and I first started leading our church, it exploded in growth. Attendance doubled almost every year for several years.

It was awesome, but at the same time, it put a lot of pressure on us. We had to figure out finances and locate larger buildings to rent. We needed to recruit volunteers, design kids’ programs and organize parking.

Whenever people face difficult problems where the solutions are complicated, or there aren’t any easy fixes, they can quickly grow mentally or emotionally exhausted. That’s when many people will begin to make wrong decisions, back away or give up altogether.

Whenever I face complex challenges, I do something simple. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase; just take the first step.” And that’s what I do. I just take the first step. Then another step. Then another.

I keep moving forward and don’t allow the size or complexity of the issues to make me weary in the meantime. Interestingly, that’s how militaries instruct their members. They train them to keep moving ahead, regardless of how slow or difficult the situation is.

Think of walking out complex problems like driving a car at night. You might be able to see only as far as your headlights, but you can still reach your destination that way.

The truth is you can make it through complicated situations successfully. You have a Creator who is intimately in love with you and cares about your every move. Lean into Him and let Him help you through one step at a time.
