IS GOD RESISTING YOUR EFFORTS?

August 5, 2022

And all of you, dress yourselves in humilityas you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to thehumble.” 1 Peter 5:5 (NLT)

God is all-loving, all-knowing and ever-present, right? There is no one greater. So… would you want someone like that to resist you in your efforts?

I’m guessing not. But that’s exactly what happens when we have pride in our hearts, according to our verse today. God resists the proud. On the other hand, you experience God’s favour, power and ability when you’re humble because your focus is right. His grace is available to you all the time, but you can’t access it if you are full of prideful, self-serving thoughts.

Resisting the temptation to focus on self will benefit your family, business, church and anything you are involved in. You see, pride says, “I can do this on my own.” God resists that attitude, but humility says, “God, I need You.” And with that attitude, you get the help you need.

In raising your family, you need God’s power and ability. If you focus only on what benefits you or what makes your kids happy, you are saying no to His help. You’re saying, “I’ve got this, God. I don’t need You,” and that’s a scary thought.

Besides, the self is a monster that is never satisfied. Kids who are raised in an inward-focused home will only become unsatisfied, jealous, bitter and indignant whenever they don’t get what they want.

In raising your family and in building your life, you want God’s help, so move your focus off trying to get all of your needs met and ask God what He wants you to do. As you put Him first, He’ll fulfill your needs in a far better way.
