CHOOSE WHAT YOU WILL LOSE

May 23, 2023

Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 (ESV)

I remember the first time someone said to me, “You have to choose what you will lose.” I didn’t like that saying because it seemed too negative, but as I thought about it, I realized there is an element of truth to it. Sometimes we really do need to choose what we are willing to lose.

For example, if I have a friend who keeps tempting me to do things that I know are wrong, I have a choice to make. If I confront this friend and tell him to stop trying to convince me to do these things, I’m taking a chance that I may lose the friendship if he doesn’t respond well.

In setting this boundary, I also have to be prepared to defend it. I have to be willing to stop hanging around with him if he is unwilling to respect my boundaries.

As uncomfortable as this might be, if I fail to act, I’m also making a choice. If I allow things to continue as they are, I am choosing to risk compromising on my morals. When I spend time with someone who tries to convince me to do what I believe is wrong, my silence is actually a form of agreement. And over time, I will likely soften my stance.

Like it or not, sometimes you need to choose what you are willing to lose. We have to make tough decisions at times. Ask yourself, “If I do nothing, what happens? Where is this heading?” And you don’t like the answer, it is time to confront the problem.
