Now you are no longer a slave, but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. Galatians 4:7 (NLT)
Have you picked up beliefs about yourself that are untrue?
I remember talking to a lady one time who told me emphatically that people of her nationality were slow to forgive and had long memories. In other words, you didn’t want to cross them.
I immediately felt sorry for her because I knew that this belief about herself would cause her much pain in life. Forgiveness is the key to living a life filled with joy and freedom, but she lived in bitterness and offence because of her beliefs about her nationality.
You may have developed belief systems like this one because of what you’ve been taught, but beliefs can also form other ways. During a low point in your life or a traumatic experience, you may have made an inner vow, such as, “I will never trust women again.” Or maybe the thought came up that that your reality was the best it was ever going to get. Let me tell you, that is a lie.
Your identity isn’t based on what has happened to you. You aren’t limited by your past experiences. In fact, when you gave your life to Jesus Christ, you were made brand new. You instantly received the nature of God inside you.
It may be difficult to wrap your head around this idea, which is why we’re going to spend a few days discussing this new identity that you have because of Jesus. For today, think about the fact that you are a child of God. This identity is the only one that really matters!
