“Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, Luke 21:34 (NLT)
If you’re not careful, your heart can become weighed down and begin to produce things you don’t like.
You may think that the things you watch on TV, read in books or view on the internet aren’t affecting you, but they can begin to influence what you believe about the world. Even if you know intellectually that what you are watching isn’t real, as you think about what you’re seeing seeds are being planted in your heart. This is a problem because your heart beliefs determine your future.
These deep beliefs that you’ve developed unconsciously over time determine your expectations, priorities and assumptions in life, which means they affect the choices you make. If they don’t line up with God’s Word, you may begin to become negative or fearful. You might start blaming others for your situation and become bitter and resentful. Or you may begin to feel anxious and worried all the time for no apparent reason.
You may even know better and try to fight the tendency to think negatively or fearfully, but when something is set in your heart, you will keep going back to it. You then have to work at replacing those beliefs with God’s thoughts on the subject… so it’s much better to prevent this problem by being careful what you program into your heart.
Your heart is the autopilot of your life and it’s the ground that grows your future harvests. Don’t let it become weighed down with the worries, fears, bitterness and anger of this world when it could overflow with love, peace, patience and kindness.
