Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Psalm 23:4 (ESV)
What storms are you facing? Whatever it is, treat it like a valley you’re just passing through.
You see, although Psalm 23 says that God leads us by still waters and green pastures, that doesn’t mean we should camp out there forever! However, it does mean we can enjoy God’s peace and presence even as we walk through hard times.
I think the key word we need to pay attention to in today’s verse is the word “through.” Notice that David doesn’t say, “Even though I will never walk through any valleys,” or, “Even though I will never have any enemies come within fifty miles of me.” He also does not say, “Even though I camp out in the valley of the shadow of death.”
Let’s talk about that for a second. How many people tend to camp out with death? For some people, all they talk about is defeat, how hard life is or how tough the enemy is. But how does the psalmist phrase it? He says, “Even though I walk through.” When hard times come—and we all experience them—don’t pitch your tent in the valley and curl up into a ball, spiritually. Don’t let go of your peace and joy.
God will guide you through the valley. Go ahead and keep sharing Christ. Continue laughing and doing what God has called you to do, even if part of your trip involves walking through something challenging.
When the going gets hard, don’t cower, camp out or give up. Keep going! God is with you, and He will walk with you through the valley in victory.
