Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: “It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.” Matthew 4:4 (MSG)
Do you ever feel hungry spiritually?
Many believers think that because they’re familiar with God’s Word, their knowledge is enough to hold them. But Jesus teaches us that just like we need food to sustain our physical bodies, we also need to feed ourselves a daily diet of the Word.
Look at it this way. Let’s say you ate toast for breakfast on this day three years ago. That toast is not doing a thing for you today. Your body pulled out the nutrients it needed, and that bread is long gone.
It’s the same with God’s Word. It’s essential to know the Word, but we need a consistent diet to keep us infused with life. It’s the reason Jesus referred to Himself as the “Bread of Life” repeatedly in John 6—because we need a daily dose of Him to live fully. That’s why devotional time is so important.
One thing I love about attending conferences is the chance to hear someone else teach God’s Word. I’ll pull out my pencil and take pages of notes on other speakers’ messages. I discovered a long time ago I need to feed on His Word daily, whether it’s through hearing others teach or studying it alone.
You see, the more you listen to, study and meditate on God’s Word during your devotional time, the more your faith develops. (See Romans 10:17.) Holy Spirit is amazing—regardless of how you take in the Word, He speaks to you through it.
Feed your spirit on the Bread of Life every day to keep it fuelled up and strong!
