“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.” Luke 6:46–48 (NLT)
As I’ve studied God’s Word, I’ve found it’s clear that God desires us to lead incredible lives. In Luke 6:46–49, Jesus shares a powerful analogy that shows the importance of building our lives on Him so we can do just that.
You see, in today’s verses, the house represents your life. The more you learn God’s Word, develop faith in the new covenant and plant it within your heart, the stronger your foundation grows in Him. Then, when storms beat against any area of your life, God says you can stand firm.
We need to get rid of the storm theology that says God sends problems into our lives to teach us something. After all, storms don’t come to strengthen anything. They come to destroy. Just look at what happened to the second house in Luke 6:48–49. Jesus says without a strong foundation, it collapsed into a pile of rubble.
Something that should give us incredible joy and passion is knowing that no matter what, it is never God’s will to hurt us. He is on our side. He’s in the house with us, not in the storm against us.
Study to grow in the life-giving, powerful, uncompromising Word of God. Then every storm that comes against your life will find you on solid ground—unshakeable and unstoppable for God!
