oy Skills: Choosing Wisely

January 26, 2022

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31–32  (NLT)

There are skills you need to build if you want to experience a joy-filled life.

When I mention joy, I’m not talking about excitement. You can be an excitement junkie and live for the adrenalin rush, but joy is deeper. It’s the deep-seated feeling of contentment you can experience when your head hits the pillow at night—even when nothing particularly good happened that day. It’s the anticipation you can have when getting up in the morning, even when you have nothing exciting to look forward to in your schedule. We all need to work at this, developing the skills that help us build joy into our lives.

One skill to develop is the ability to make wise choices. You see, we all have choices to make. Some lead to joy and some don’t. If you break the law against murder, for example, you’ve exercised a choice. However, that choice is going to cost you your freedom.

The choices we make always have consequences—some good and some bad. I’m not talking about punishment. God isn’t out to punish you for your choices. It’s just that there are natural consequences to our actions. So if you want to experience more joy in life, you have to look at your choices.

Are you making wise choices that are based on what you’ve learned in God’s Word? No one is perfect, but the more you choose wisely, the more you’ll experience joy in your mind, your marriage, your relationships, at work and at home.
